Approach and Glimpse
Keywords:
APPROACH, GLIMPSE
The approach system is designed to simulate rooms having an actual size, allowing people to populate different parts of a room while still allowing
the same visual components we have always had in a room. Rooms are
invisibly divided into nine sections, much like a telephone keypad, and players may move from section to section as they like with no penalty to the
overall population of the room, or what they might see in says or motes. To
facilitate this, the approach command can be both manual and automatic. You
may approach directions, people, or objects manually using the approach command, or you might automatically approach a player or object by acting on
them in certain ways. Not all commands will cause an approach, but many
will. Motes were left out of this system because the game has no way of
interpreting motes to determine if they are near or far type actions, so use
your own discretion and try not to hug people from across the room. This
system is only to provide a little more realism to the mud.
Objects also exist in different sections now, though currently all objects have defaulted to the center section. If you drop an item in one section, that it where others will find it, and that is where they will approach when acting on it. Of note, this system also affects buried objects, so digging in one section of a room may not find what you are looking for, as it may be in another. This system does NOT affect foraging, mining, or material gathering for those various systems.
When you walk into a room, you will begin in the appropriate section. If you enter from the south, you will be in the southern section, from the east and you will be in the eastern section, etc... This does not affect movement for now, so you do not have to cross a room to exit the other side, movement is as it always has been. Recall, travel runes, portals, and all forms of magical transport will start you in the center section, as will going through up and down exits.
The glimpse command will show you where people are positioned in the room. It is not a replacement for look, and will not show you the same things, such as rtitles, but instead shows positions and sections.
Manual Syntax: approach <direction>
approach <person>
approach <object>
