Those wishing to code for The Gathering... should read this file seriously.
Coding is not a thing to take on lightly. It is a responsibility,
especially in the mudding community where a mud sometimes relies on coders to keep things functional and to introduce new things and fresh features that
will keep players interested in returning. That having been said, coding is
also not glorious. People may show appreciation if you add in a cool new
feature, but in a week or two, it will just be another command to them, though it will also become just one more feature that makes this mud a unique experience for new players, and large features could even become a
drawing feature which will bring in new players that hear of it. Coders
merely work on the framework of a mud, though. We work on the skeleton
behind the body of a mud, and though people can see the effect of the changes in that skeleton, no one but the other coders will actually see all of the hard work that you put into it.
The Gathering... runs on the Dawn of Time codebase, which is significantly different than other codebases in many respects, but it isn't hard to make the mental transition from the functions you may be used to from those other codebases, and many , and many of the different functions are just simpler to use.
If you wish to code for The Gathering... simply send a note to Kedanna and Trellan letting us know that you're interested, what coding experience you have, and maybe an idea of what types of ideas you have for coding projects you feel you could offer. Please include an email address for us to respond to if you don't plan to play here as a regular character, usually in my experience, coders don't play as much as other people.
