General Physical Description & Biology:
Basic humanoid form: two arms, two legs, two eyes, one nose, one mouth. No "extras" save for the fact they are follicularly gifted. Both men and women grow thick beards and usually have thick, full hair. They have pale hair and ashy or grey skin. Their teeth are long and they have been known to sharpen them. They are broadly bnuild with large strong bones, perhaps from heavy lifting and repeated impacts like mining or smithing. They are not generally muscular, and tend to me more lithe than their dwarven cousins. They have two livers which gives them a robust and healthy constitution and may be the reason their lifespan extends past that of a human. It is also why they are able to process alcohol better than most races and in fact need to drink small amount daily to maintain their digestive health. Their pupils are quite oversized.
Basic Personality:
Varies. Can be of any Ethos, but tend to neutral or evil. They are intelligent and can be sly and cunning. They prefer to stay out of the light as it hurts their eyes and they are prone to sunburn.
Origin and Lore:
They are said to be the distant cousins of dwarves who made their way deep into the underdark and lived with the drow. Perhaps a little bit of drow blood mingled with the dwarves over time creating the distinct duergar. Not quite welcome in Drow society, they have created their own, centered around the ores that can only be found deep in the dark places of the realm.
Naming Convention:
Generally have a given name and a family name. They take naming convention from both dwarven practice and drow practice, opting for their clan name, but also descriptives. Their first names tend to be a blend of drow and dwarven. Example: Jysdanka Darkore or Lyphylonto of Clan Spideraxe
Preferred Habitat:
Underground away from the sun and light.
Society Structure:
Live within the strict hierarchies, something similar to both Drow and Dwarven cultures. They live with their clans who are part of a broader Karn. Their Communities have both a Chieftain and a Chieftainess who rule together over the Karn which is the gathering of clans. Both are equally powerful and the society has layers beneath them. Clan leaders act as advisors to the Chieftain and Chieftainess, representing their clan. Each clan has a similar hierarchy within it with sub clan leaders acting as advisors to the clan leader. Those without a clan are considered a broken caste and can be treated akin to slaves until they earn their place within a clan either through battle, cunning or, most likely, assassination.
