To whom the Fields themselves belong is a matter of some small debate. In most perceptions, the Fields appear to be an extension of the Dreaming, in which various fantasies, nightmares, collective thoughts and the like will gather and carry out their duties and lives. Here in Tirradyn, however, the Grey Fields appear to be a representative portion of the Sunless Lands: the territory belonging to Death. The Sunless Lands are not often a destination themselves - they are instead a transient point through which spirits pass on their way to life from nothingness, and on their way from death to nothingness again. Whether or not one reaches the afterlife through the Sunless Lands is not a question Death has ever chosen to directly answer.
The Black Oak centered in the Fields shows the borderline between the Sunless Lands and the Dreaming, as should be clear from its chaotic interior: the higher one climbs, the closer one comes to discovering the 'heart' of Life and Death, while the roots of the tree dig down into the darkness of fantasy and illusion that makes up much of the Dreaming.
The gateway leading through planes to reach the Fields radiates enormous untouchable power. Though this power is by and large beyond the ken of living creatures, many races are drawn to it unconsciously, thus resulting in an encampment of orc and goblin slavers around the base of the mountains in which the gateway stands. This rough alliance of dark creatures represents the heart of slave trade throughout the continent of Ariandor, channeling their living cargo through underground trade routes that lead into encampments across the land, even into the darker markets of Dragondale and the Underdark, according to rumor.
