Halflings tend to live in rural, farming villages. A Halfling home is referred to as a burrow, often an underground set of rooms built into a hill. Always kept clean and well furnished, Halflings enjoy their creature comforts, and their homes reflect this (though other races may have trouble moving around, as these places are built halfling-size!) Halfling communities are often led by an elected mayor, and in Halfling society males and females are on equal footing. Villages are often located in green, fertile hills and plains, good for farming and the making of their burrows.
Halflings have few large-scale cities of their own, but a few Halflings have managed to live and trade within the cities of other races, where their well-liked personalities have let them thrive. These people take to city-life surprisingly quickly, and few could know as much of the goings-ons in a place as a well-informed Halfling.
Halflings are considered to be on the same technological level as humans in most instances, but their natural talents let them excel in certain fields. Excellent farmers and even better cooks, few can create as good of a meal as a Halfling can. This is good for them, as it is no exaggeration when it is claimed that Halflings have six different meals a day. Halflings rarely produce real implements of war, but it is rare to find a Halfling without a sling.
Halflings are not a confrontational people, and "adventures" are frowned upon in their societies. Still, almost every Halfling has some skill in moving silently and being unseen due to childhood games, thus they take easily to becoming rogues and rangers. Though many would mock a Halfling's choice of weaponry, a sling and a dagger usually, these small folk know full well the deadly capacity their weapons have, honed through childhood games of skipping and throwing rocks. Many a warlord has tried to attack Halfling homes, believing the inhabitants weak and pacifistic, only to be turned back by showers of stones from the shadows.
The Hobbits (as Halflings are sometimes called) believe in marriage, and family is important for them. Most Halflings can give you a deep family tree, telling you tales of their great grandparents, and even further back. Halflings don't tend to mate outside of their race (particularly the males when concerning larger races, due to reasons of "size"), but when they do, it's usually to their cousins, Dwarves or Gnomes, though an occasional binding to a Human isn't totally unheard of, and a source of much gossip.
