Your hitpoints are the total number of 'units of life' you have. You lose hitpoints when you are fighting, diseased, poisoned etc. When your hitpoints reach 0 you become stunned when they go below
a certain negative number i.e. -10 you die. Your hitpoints will
replenish themselves over a period of time.
