Layering allows you to cover articles of clothing/armor under other pieces of clothing/armor. So when people look at your character they will see the items you want them to see. Such as a coat, pants, shoes rather then seeing all the item slots such as under garments, shirts, etc.
To use layering you have to start backwards in wearing clothes. In this example the character will layer clothing over top of their under garments.
wear coat
wear shirt coat
wear bra shirt
wear pants
wear underwear pants
wear shoes
wear socks shoes
Now when a play looks at your character they will see a coat, pants, and shoes and everything underneath is hidden from them.
