Lycanthropes live among those of their humanoid race, hiding their affliction when possible and dodging the followers of nature that would seek to remove them as being unnatural beings. Lycanthropy is indeed an unnatural disease, but one that follows many of the patterns of normal diseases. Undead cannot contract Lycanthropy, nor can beings between life and death such as Dhampiel, Angels, and Demons. Similarly, a Lycanthrope cannot become cursed with Vampirism, being one of the few living exceptions to the rule. Also Lycanthropy strangely cannot be contracted by amalgam races, such as Mrem, Lizardmen, and Rawulfs, perhaps because they are close to nature and already bear animal characteristics.
Lycanthropes are unnatural creatures, but hold many unique strengths. In both forms, Lycanthropes are physically stronger and somewhat faster than whatever race they originally came from. Lycanthropes are generally difficult to kill due to their single-minded rage in combat and their physical superiority to most other races. Lycanthropes also, obviously, can change their form between that of their humanoid form and that of a humanoid and animal cross. Particularly powerful Lycanthropes can also assume the form of a seemingly normal animal of their type, though only natural lycanthropes or those who have been diseased for a long time can assume this form. A few myths exist, but contrary to popular belief, Lycanthropes are not immune to diseases and age just as quickly as members of whatever humanoid race they come from.
With strengths come weaknesses, however, and the Lycanthrope is no exception. Silver burns the skin of a lycanthrope as surely as any flame, as does the curious metal mercury, or quicksilver. Additionally, Lycanthropes are warded by the heavy scent and display of the herbs Wolf's Bane or Belladonna, both of which act like a lethal poison to them. Lycanthropes can often shift into their more animal-like forms during times of extreme emotion, such as when angered, and often such rages won't end until either the Lycanthrope falls or those around it do.
Those who are born with the disease tend to have better control over their alternate forms. The disease has a chance of being passed to a possible recipient through the transfer of liquids, generally when saliva or blood enters the victim through a bite or wound (though liquids of a more sexual nature also have a chance of passing the disease on.) Inflicted lycanthropes tend to have little control over their form changing, particularly right after being inflicted, and they will often get mental blanks while they are raging in their alternate form. The animal form that one gains upon birth or infliction varies on the individual, usually choosing an animal that is fitting for the victem, but not always. A werewolf isn't necessarily going to turn another to a wolf, possibly turning the bitten victem to a bear or a tiger, any number of animals is a possibility.
Besides possibly turning sexual partners into Lycanthropes themselves, Lycans tend to mix the sexual habits of their parent humanoid race and the animal that they have. It's not uncommon for Lycans to give into baser, more primative instincts due to their closeness to whatever animal they an turn into. As Lycans can inadvertantly shift form during times of great emotion, it's not unheard of for an unsuspecting lover to get a rather shocking (and potentially lethal) surprise as to the nature of his or her partner.
