Relationships with species outside their own are unusual due to the isolationist structure of merfolk society and their habit of preferring their own kind above all others. With that said, merfolk embarking upon their Calling can and do interact with countless races outside their own, and may if inclined engage with them romantically. These relationships tend to be temporary for one very notable reason: the merperson will eventually return home, and the vast majority of other races cannot survive under the sea.
Sexual relationships with humans, elves, and angels are the most feasible among the land-walking races due to their comparable physiology. Evil races and those belonging to biologically comparable races that have chosen to follow an evil path tend to be wholly eschewed, assuming the merperson is aware of it. To knowingly have a relationship with a creature that is by necessity an evil one would be unthinkable to most merfolk.
All said, the Calling is when merfolk are the most likely to interact with other species, and during this time they are expected to explore and experiment in order to increase their knowledge about the world. By taking these years for themselves they are made capable of satiating their intense curiosity; this approach carries through relationships as well, and is largely considered to be a natural part of a merfolk's path toward elderhood. Politically, merfolk have little if any interaction with species outside their own.
