NOTE: Starkin and Nightkin are Rethian races, and as such would have little to no knowledge of Tirradyn, including IC knowledge of Dragondale and other cities, upon creation. They will need to RP learning of Tirradyn over time.
In the near-forgotten days of Rethia's long ago past, a swath of darkness swept over the constellations in the night sky. Several stars winked out of existence, their light extinguished by the overwhelming will of the Dark Father's twisted magics. On the world below, the Starkin, blessed by the Earth Mother, cried out as half their number fell to their knees. Darkness flowed through them, changing them inward and out. The shimmering starlight in their hair fled, to be replaced by tendrils of darkness, touched with strands of silver starlight. Their eyes grew cold and merciless, taking on all hues of the night sky. The brilliant, pearly wings upon their backs changed. All the lights of the aurora spread through them, the colors swirling, coalescing until patterns resembling an exploding, dying star could be seen. Now pale of skin and dark of hair, their transformation was nearly complete.
The voice of the Dark One Valafar spoke in their minds, urging them to turn on those nearest them. These twisted, altered Starkin turned their cold gazes to sibling, parent and neighbor and erupted in violence, tearing their way through the Astral Vale, their desire to flee this land overwhelming. Guided by the hand of the Dark Father, the newly changed beings took to the night sky, flying over river valleys and ancient forests, to land, finally, in the harsh mountains near Arioch. As their feet touched the ground, out of the darkness surrounding them stepped their creator. The strongest of them was called forward, and his throat was torn asunder by the deadly fangs of the Dark Father. As the creature's blood soaked the ground, the mountain clearing began to change. The grasses and trees darkened, the leaves turning a bright silver in color, the grasses black as night. The Dark Father vanished as quickly as he appeared, and newly granted knowledge filled the minds of the newly dubbed Nightkin. This was their home. Their realm. The Twilight Expanse.
Nightkin Physical Attributes
Nightkin are forged from the dark, cold expanse of space, that space between stars where light struggles to reach. Their hair can range any color, from whites to blacks to varying hues all in one. Their skin is any shade, so long as it is pale. Their eyes trend toward cold, icy colors, or darker hues like blacks and greys. Green and other colors are rare, but still occur. Legend says that when a nightkin dies, his spirit departs the earthly remains in the form of a visible shadow. Nightkin are primarily nocturnal creatures, and most of their worshipping and group rituals happen under the light of the moons. When a Nightkin is born, their eyes are closed until they are lifted into the night sky and bathed in the darkness that is their domain. Much like their Starkin cousins, the Nightkin do not have wings until puberty. A faint tattoo of a pair of wings will grow and change as they age, revealing hints at what their wings will resemble when they finally appear.
When the Nightkin chooses to do so, they can make their wings vanish. When the wings are hidden, the starburst mark on the wings, as well as the varying colors of the wings themselves, are transferred to the person's back as a tattoo. This vanishes, of course, when the wings are summoned again.
Nightkin Culture
The Nightkin live by a system of 'Whatever it takes to win'. They have their own code of honor, but it is more like honor among thieves than any chivalrous system. They are fiercely loyal to others of their race, and public disputes are frowned upon, often resulting in rebuke or outright punishment by the more traditional Nightkin of influence. They are quick to violence, and quick to anger. When they care for someone, however, they do so with every fiber of their being. They are solitary, often leaving their homes for weeks at a time, and make excellent explorers for this reason. The Nightkin utilize tattoos in rank and ritual, and nearly any tattoo can be symbolic to a Nightkin.
Nightkin Breeding Info
Nightkin have gestation time similar to that of the elven races. Breeding with the elven races produces a half-elf. Breeding with another Nightkin will produce Starkin, while breeding with a Nightkin will produce a child of either race, while breeding with any demonic race will produce a hanyou.
