Rethia is the world from which Valafar and Sinsalee originated. There, they were the God of Death, the Dark Father, and the Goddess of Nature, the Earth Mother, respectively. It was a vast, wild world. Full of dark, primeval forests and many great cities. Between cities, the world was a dangerous place, long in tooth and claw. And it was an ancient world. A world beloved by the pair that fashioned it from the potent magic of the cosmos.

During a war in which a druid called Atira attempted to banish Valafar from Rethia, ancient magics were unleashed, and raged uncontrolled. People died by the thousands, and gods themselves fell from the sky. During Atira's ritualistic attempt to banish the Dark Father, her spell was interrupted, the fell magics contained within it released. This was enough to begin the chain of events known as the Sundering. First, people grew ill, animals mutated. Then, gods began changing, transforming. Sometimes dying. Entire villages vanished. Cities crumbled to dust in seconds, their inhabitants consumed by strange, eldritch powers. Creatures locked away since the dawn of time were released from their prisons, and began to wreak havoc on a world unprepared for them. The mortal children of the gods, any of them, but specifically the Dark Father and the Earth Mother, were tracked down and slain in violent, ritualistic ways. Their lives sacrificed for the dark purpose of the Jade Crone, Atira.

In time, the strain grew to be too much. The continued drawing on Rethia's lifeforce, both to attack and defend in an endless succession of wars caused the world itself to weaken. Weaken, and begin to collapse. Rethia fell, millions died in fire, flood and windstorms. Countless more fell into the yawning abyss of the void as it encroached on the dying world.

It was only the dying breath, the last desperate gasp of the Earth Mother, that brought what remains of Rethia together, dragging it with her, and with the Dark Father, as their souls plunged into the void, to be set adrift for ages untold. With the Dark Father using the last of his strength to preserve the people of Rethia, by wrapping a veil of Rethian souls around the shattered land, the pair saved their people. Or, what remained of them.

The God known as Stianiku, of Tirradyn, glimpsed the Earth Mother's soul adrift in the Void, and drew it to him. Unbeknownst to him at the time, with her also came the Dark Father, and what remained of Rethia, which fell into Tirradyn's Black Sea. The Earth Mother's fragile, shattered soul was placed into the body of Stianiku's unborn child. Tirradyn's magic twisted Valafar's soul, thrusting him into the body of a demon, unable to find a 'perfect' host. Thus were Rethia's two most powerful, most ancient deities made mortal and brought to Tirradyn, where they would forge new lives and friendships among some of Tirradyn's greatest heroes.
