Shadows, being undead, have no real society themselves. Instead, they tend to blend in with current society, usually of the race that they were in life.
Shadows can be of many different races. There are a few exceptions, Angels, Demons, and Succubi are divine (or infernal) creatures and don't seem to be capable of turning into a Shadow. Regardless, most Shadows were once Human, though many also came from races such as Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs.
Despite being on the dead side of things, Shadows find that their physical forms still require food to survive. Though the death of the mortal form is not necessarily death of the Shadow itself, it will lead to it after too long a time period. The Shadow itself doesn't eat in the conventional sense, but feeds off of the energies of other people's shadows, much in a similar way that Succubi drain the energies from another being's pleasure. This feeding is almost never fatal, and more often than not isn't even noticed by the victim, but does lead for Shadows to prefer to be around the living in some form.
Shadows often possess the same skills they had in life, but strangely seem particularly adept at the arts of subterfuge and trickery. Thievery is common, and it's little wonder that a being that is a shadow itself tends to enjoy being cloaked in darkness. Magic is used by those who knew it in life, though most inevitably turn to more darker forms.
These beings aren't inherently evil, though they often succumb to such vile thoughts due to the very nature of their "lives." One who was slain in such a horrible manner is quite likely to become bitter, especially when he or she is unable to find peace.
Though dead, the solid form a Shadow is able to project is totally functioning. Any feeling and sensory information the body gains, the Shadow gains himself as if it were him gaining it directly. A Shadow could very well have sex with this projection and would feel the pleasure as if he or she were the one gaining it.
