Slime Origins

The first slime originated from an alchemical experiment that failed. The alchemist was attempting to make a dehydrated acid that could be condensed into a solid to easily and safely transport, then rehydrated into a liquid to be used on site as needed as transporting a solid mass is much easier than a liquid. During several attempts the outcomes were less than ideal producing what looks like mere lumps of impure gemstones that were not only completely worthless as a gemstone but wouldnt turn back into an acid. These were all tossed aside and into his garbage heap with his other failed experiments. It's here that the first slime was born. Over a long period of time in this waste pit of magical reagents one of these lumps was slowly absorbing residual energy that eventually manifested in a mindless ooze like monster. Over the years this monster fed and grew stronger and eventually found a way out and into the world. Against all odds the creature managed to survive long enough that it eventually split in two producing another core and thus another ooze in turn. As time passed evolution took its course on these ooze like beings altering their colors and traits to aid in their survivability. They also started growing smarter, knowing when to hide and when to hunt for food.
One mage whose name has been lost in the pages of history was studying these oozes when a startling discovery was made, when the creature had taken the form of a human it could speak, crudely at first but it was learning his language and over the years it also learned his ways. No longer being a baseless ooze, the creature was dubbed a slime to distinguish them apart in his journals. What the mage didn't know is that each time the slime divided and made an offspring it retained some of its knowledge thus due to his efforts the slimes got smarter and continued to evolve. It's unclear what happened to this mage, he simply disappeared one day, his lab abandoned and the slimes he was studying had escaped. All that remained were partially recovered journals of his experiments.
These intelligent slimes had disappeared, faded into the environment not to be seen for countless years. A slime here or there was rumored to have been seen, or even slain on sight thinking it was a monster. Sightings are happening far more frequently of late and it's rumored that there's a colony of these slime creatures living somewhere in secret unknown to the rest of the realm.
