Darkling

Beings consumed by and made of the shadowrealm.

Upon entering this world from the shadow realm, a darkling will choose a
form. It can be anything conceivable by them...mrem, troll, human...however
two things remain constant from darkling to darkling. The first is the
color of their skin, which varies from charcoal grey to pitch black. The
second is a notable lack of almost all body hair. While some hair might
exist upon their heads, it is difficult upon creation to picture and form
every strand of hair, so most do not bother with it, as they aren't
creatures of vanity, though it is possible that some would take more effort
in this. Because they are made of shadow, they weigh almost nothing in
comparison to their form. Normally, to survive outside the shadowrealm,a
darkling would consume souls. Trellan devised a means of protecting the
world from the hunger of the escaping darklings by binding their energy to
his own, thereby giving them the ability to maintain their form while
increasing his own strength, though the darklings need not serve him in any
way. Darklings would consume these souls by killing their victim, then upon
death, they absorb it from the dying/dead corpse.

They tend to have changeable personalities as they lost what they onnce
were. They are rebuilding themselves. The tend to not have desires of their
own and will mimic the behaviors of those around them to they might fit into
society. Over time, they may develop their own personality and desires.

Darklings are perhaps the least understood race upon Tirradyn. They are
neither a natural race, nor a race specifically created by anyone. Instead,
they are a product of the consequences of misplaced magic and time. It
happens upon occasion that a person becomes trapped in the shadow world
either through a malfunctioning magical portal, or in tampering with shadow
magics. Over time, this person changes within the shadow world, losing their
physical form and most, if not all, memories of their former life. Their
shape alters and eventually becomes nothing more than an ephemeral memory of
what it once was. Over time, they lose their form and being, simply
evaporating away into shadow.

They tend to embrace whatever name they are given first. Sometimes the
first few sounds they hear upon entering the world from the shadowrealm,
sometimes, it is the only memory they remember of their former selves.

Dark places. While they want to embrace the light, they have been too far
away from it.

The adapt to whatever society and place they first enter.
