The City of Ghilldovia

GHILLDOVIA
The City of Ghilldovia is one that holds many mysteries to people from the surface as well as even other Merfolk who prefer the warmer waters. It is one that has thrived for longer than the Merfolk there can remember, built beneath the basalt and through the rocky, icy caverns deep beneath the Sea of Ice. The Merfolk there hold Lord Nereus above any other, some referring to their determined beliefs as the Order of Nereus, soley devoted to the God of the Seas.
The people rely on projections into the minds of others for communication and often can be heard singing through a blending of the notes in one's mind as well as the uniquely vibrating sounds through the water. There is no defined ruler of the city as instead the people honor the current High Priest or Priestess of the local temple to speak for them in a time of need or decide factors into the progress of the city.
Homes and other buildings are built into the natural shapes of the rock and are often decorated with kelp and the unique corals that grow at those depths. Geysers provide warmth through the city and make life abundant. Forests of kelp grow and are often used for many foods, clothing, and other supplies. There is also an abundance of crystalline formations that grow, most likely from the contrasting temperatures as well as the rare production of dark mithril. Most history and teachings are passed by telling as very few have experience with writing. It is said though, that the ancient stone carvings found through the city explain the history, magic, and mysteries of the Merfolk peoples to those who understand how to read them.
