The Basics

Keywords: QUICK-START, QUICK START, SETTING
Welcome to Tirradyn! This file is designed to give you a sort of quick start and run down of the MUD's setting, so that you can dive into the RP quickly and know the basic themes, lore, and information you need to know to get going. These are things that essentially all characters and players should know.

1. The world of The Gathering... is known as Tirradyn, and it is divided into seven continents. These are Ariandor (a temperate continent, the least dangerous and most populated), Nersa (a heavily forested continent, home to elves, orcs, and many faeries), Azure (a wetter and at times swampy continent, home to many different races), Hikaru (a mountainous continent that serves as a home to dwarves and a number of oriental-styled cultures), Thathoth (a harsh desert, swamp, and other rough terrain-infested continent), Samadnar (a cursed continent, frequented by the undead), and Elzeothis (an icy continent, filled with barbarians and races suited to the cold.)

2. In addition, Tirradyn has four moons, each of which can also sustain life and can be reached through the proper portals. These are Nephilim (the demon moon), Sazaa (the water moon), Aglet (the icy angel moon), and Xxyzx (the madness moon.)

3. Tirradyn is best described as a high-fantasy world. Magic is common, and for some is a daily part of life.

4. The gods of Tirradyn often take a more direct role than in other worlds, and may choose to intervene in events if petitioned to do so. To see the gods within the pantheon, make sure to read 'help gods'. Many also have their own individual help files.

5. If you are a cleric, you'll need to choose a patron deity. Without a god to follow, a cleric won't be able to use his or her powers ICly! Make sure to write a note to RP when you've decided.

6. Everyone in Tirradyn is capable of a limited form of telepathy, when assisted with a proper telepathy device. This will allow a character to directly contact someone across great distances (through tells) or to contact everyone else on Tirradyn who may have such a device equipped (through the 'IC' channel.)

7. The major powers within Tirradyn are often the Religions and Clans. Generally, each has its own help file. Religions and Clans can offer relatively powerful equipment to those that join them, not to mention the obvious benefits of mutual protection and common goals.

8. Tirradyn is often different from the real world in terms of interpretations and views. For example, homosexuality is common, and not viewed as unusual. Except for certain races like the orcs and drow, the genders are considered equal as well.

9. Make sure to read the rules, starting at 'help rules' and all of the files that link from it. Ignorance is never an excuse!

10. Don't forget to set up your character! Make a short description and a long description as soon as possible, and make sure it's enough to get letgained! See 'help short', 'help long', and 'help letgain'.
